Buzzkill: Wasps blow it in second half at Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. –  It looked like an Emory & Henry blowout. Then the Wasps blew it.

E&H  squandered a 31-point lead as Guilford  scored 35 unanswered points in the final 19:22 of the game to seize a 35-31 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory Saturday  at Armfield Athletic Center.

The Wasps (5-5, 2-5) led 24-0 at the half and moved up 31-0 on Kyle Boden’s 5-yard scoring pass to Kenton Williams.

Josh Schow finally broke the Quakers’ scoring drought with his 1-yard touchdown plunge at 4:22 in the third period. Then the Quakers (6-4, 5-2) proceeded to light E&H up.

Guilford QB Matt Pawlowski passed for 358 yards, including a 10-yard TD pass to Adam Smith, a 15-yard touchdown toss to Nick Mearite, a 14-yard scoring strike to Chad Christopher.

Pawloski’s 42-yard scoring bomb to Smith with 19 seconds remaining to play crushed the Wasps’ hopes for a winning season.

Boden led Emory & Henry with 245 yards passing, including a 11-yard TD pass to Lucas Kirby and a 57-yard touchdown throw to Cleo Cooper. Joe Vaughn led E&H with 48 yards rushing.  The Wasps also got a 19-yard field goal from Austin Breeding and a 39-yard fumble return for a score by Joe Lewis.
