BRISTOL, Va. — For Rye Cove’s volleyball team, defeat came all too swiftly.
For Eastside, defeat came in the form of an excruciatingly slow thrill ride. But at the end of the semifinals of the 1A West Region tournament on Wednesday night, both the Lady Eagles and the Lady Spartans were heading home.
Rye Cove dropped a 26-24, 25-14, 25-14 decision to Auburn in the first match. Eastside followed with a heartbreaking 25-15, 16-25, 25-16, 17-25, 16-14 loss at the hands of Galax. Galax and Auburn will meet in the West Region title game on Thursday.
The Lady Eagles struggled to contain Auburn’s hard-hitting front line, which was anchored by Madison Shumaker and Brooke Bostwick. Bostwick finished with 21 kills, 12 digs and four aces and Shumaker contributed 14 kills, 16 digs and six aces.
Lucindy Lawson had 18 digs and five kills for Rye Cove. Kristin Sanders dished out 22 assists and Destiny Gibson added 10 digs and eight kills.
