Up Against The Wall Gallery offers museum-quality pieces and custom framing

“This is all I've ever done,” Up Against The Wall Gallery owner Mike Milhorn said of his life's career in custom framing.

A lifelong local, Mike Milhorn possesses 48 years experience in his craft and is capable of expertly framing any size painting, photo, or print - you name it, he can frame it.

He opened Up Against The Wall Gallery in 1980 and has since won multiple framing competitions for his work. The gallery, consistently operated by Mike and his wife of 31 years, Lisa Anne, stands at 316 E. Market Street in Downtown Kingsport. Lisa Anne attributes much of their success to their consistency in the quality of their work.

“Downtown's been good to us,” she said. “The local people have supported us and that's the reason we're still here... We've been here and they've been here for us.”

Up Against The Wall Gallery offers its loyal patrons a multitude of options in the aesthetic realm including: paintings, photography and prints by both local and world renowned artists; handmade pottery and jewelry; home accessories; antiques; a bridal registry; and, of course, custom “museum quality” framing performed on-site by Mike and 28-year veteran framer, Chris.

“We have the expertise in custom framing that nobody else has,” Lisa Anne explained. “We can frame a postcard or a museum piece. We do it all.”

The quality of the custom-built frames and other materials used at Up Against the Wall are the best, bar none, Lisa Anne said. People look at our work and think we're expensive but “our prices, when compared apples to apples to all of the outlet places and other places in town, are less.”

“The reason... is because we buy in bulk. Therefore, we get a better price and we pass the price on to our customers,” she explained.

Up Against The Wall features original artwork and rare prints by some of the country's most sought-after artists. Sporting artist Brett Smith's work is exhibited, as well as countless pieces by one of the most famous living artists in America, Pat Buckley Moss.

“We're the largest dealer of P. Buckley Moss's work in the whole country,” Mike exclaimed.

“[P. Buckley Moss] will be here Nov. 22nd and 23rd for a big showing,” Lisa Anne added.

Certain other artists displayed in-store may be commissioned through the gallery for special portraits of individuals or beloved pets.

Up Against The Wall also carries unique styles of jewelry ranging from one-of-a-kind heirloom pieces created by a Virginian artist to the newly-popular commercial line of jewelry, Bourbon and Boweties.

In addition, the gallery is a dealer of Jan Barboglio metalworks as well as dinnerware by the likes of Vietri, Juliska, Villeroy and Boch, and Skyros - all available for bridal registry.

Lisa Anne said Up Against The Wall “ships every day all over the country” and is presently working on a full e-commerce website for their valued customers' convenience.

“We care about our customers,” Lisa Anne said. “We develop relationships with our customers. We get to know them... [and] what they're looking for so that we best know how to provide them with that.”

Up Against The Wall Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon, Saturdays. It is closed Sundays and Mondays. Holiday store hours vary. For more information, visit the website at www.upagainstthewallgallery.com or call 423-246-7210.
