Gate City breezes to conference crown, will host volleyball regional Tuesday

GATE CITY — Gate City’s volleyball team faced a familiar opponent on Saturday night in the title game of the Conference 40 tournament.

Thanks to their fast-paced offense, the result was also a familiar one for the Lady Blue Devils.

Top-seeded Gate City swept past No. 2 John Battle 25-17, 25-12, 25-18 to earn its fifth victory of the season against its Mountain District rival.

Gate City will host Grayson County in the 2A West Regional on Tuesday night at 7 o’clock. Battle will hit the road to face Marion.

The Lady Blue Devils were never seriously challenged during Saturday’s match with the Lady Trojans. Gate City’s hitters found holes in Battle’s defense time and again.

Battle, meanwhile, could never manage to string together enough points to get Gate City back on its heels. The Lady Devils trailed briefly at the outset of Game 2, but soon sprinted out to a 9-4 lead and never looked back.

Kyra Jessee led Gate City with 16 kills to go along with seven digs, and Kerri Hite ran the offense to perfection, handing out 19 assists and making seven digs. Haley Reed had 12 assists, nine digs and five kills for the Lady Devils.

Sarah Robbins led Battle with eight kills and Kylie Smith had 11 digs.
