CASTLEWOOD — Eastside fought off a determined Rye Cove squad on Thursday evening and laid claim to the Conference 48 volleyball tournament championship.
The match went the distance, with the Lady Spartans finally prevailing 25-16, 16-25, 27-25, 25-27 and 15-13 over Greg Gilliam’s Lady Eagles.
“It was good for both of us to have this type of game heading into regionals,” said Eastside coach Brianne Casteel. “I don’t think either team has played up to what me or Coach Gilliam the past few games. So tonight was very beneficial heading into regionals.”
The Cumberland District teams traded punches for the first four sets, sending the match to the decisive Game 5.
Rye Cove burst out to a 5-0 lead in the final game but Eastside clawed its way back, pulling even at 13 then taking the last two points of the game.
Erin Stanley’s 29 kills led the way for the Lady Spartans. Brittany Stapleton closed with 38 assists.
Lucindy Lawson had 32 digs and Kristin Sanders exploded for 43 assists in the Lady Eagles’ effort.
