Woman charged with embezzlement from Blountville cemetery

Nina Bernice Sexton

A 77-year-old Blountville woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $60,000 from a local cemetery, with police saying she did so while serving as treasurer for its volunteer association.

Last week a Sullivan County grand jury returned a sealed indictment against Nina Bernice Sexton, address listed as 363 Shadowtown Road. She was arrested Monday by the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office and booked in the Blountville jail.

According to presentments in Sullivan County court, the embezzlements occurred from the New Gunnings Cemetery Association between October of 2005 and October of 2013.  Gunnings Cemetery is located off Highway 126 in Blountville, near Sullivan Central High School.

Sullivan County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Leslie Earhart said Sexton was a volunteer with the organization, acting as treasurer. Police launched an investigation into her alleged thefts in September of last year.

Sexton is charged with one count of theft over $60,000, a class B felony. She was released from jail on Monday after posting $7,000 bond.

Her next court date has yet to be set.
