BIG STONE GAP — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a design public hearing to show plans for the proposed widening of a .65-mile section of State Route 613, East Stone Gap Road, in Wise County.
The proposed project begins just west of the intersection of State Route 617 (Stewart Street) and ends just east of the intersection of State Route 612 (Tate Springs Road).
The public hearing will be from 5-7 p.m. at Powell Valley Middle School. To give citizens more flexibility to participate, there will be no formal presentation. Instead, residents will be able to review maps, drawings and other materials explaining the proposed project and discuss the plans with VDOT representatives.
In addition to widening the .65-mile section of State Route 613, VDOT also plans to provide drainage improvements and guardrail additions.
During a portion of the construction phase, VDOT proposes a temporary road closure to remove a vertical rock cut on the west end of the project. Rerouted traffic would use Route 612 (Tate Spring Road), Route 609 (Baum Hollow Road), Route 612 (Clinch Haven Road) and/or Route 602 (Egan Road) to detour.
Besides the opportunity to participate at the Nov. 19 public hearing, residents will have a chance to record verbal comments for the record any time during the meeting. Written comments will be accepted during the meeting or may be submitted to VDOT by Nov. 29.
Maps and other materials pertaining to the project are available for review at the VDOT Bristol District Office located at 870 Bonham Road, Bristol. For more information, or if you require special assistance to participate in the Nov. 19 meeting, call the VDOT District Office at (276) 669-6151 or device for hearing impaired (TTY) at 711.
