GATE CITY — Gate City rolled off its fifth victory in a row with a 21-6 Mountain District win over Wise Central on Friday night at Legion Field.
The Blue Devils (6-4, 3-1) opened up a 21-0 lead and then held off the Warriors’ attempt at a comeback.
With 9:02 to go in the fourth quarter, Central’s Darren England went in from the 3-yard line to bring coach Darren Reed's Warriors to 21-6. The extra point failed.
Central (1-8, 0-4) recovered the ensuing onside kick at the 50-yard line and drove to the Gate City 27. An errant pass was intercepted by the Blue Devils’ Michael Collier to stop the drive.
After forcing a Devils punt, Central managed only three plays before Hunter Collier ended any hopes of a comeback with another interception.
The “Collier Connection” also accounted for one of Gate City’s scores. Quarterback Hunter hit older brother Michael on a 9-yard score in the second quarter.
The Blue Devils’ other scores were a 1-yard run by Logan Rasnic and a 55-yard sprint by Robbie Hicks.
“We knew it was going to be a battle,” said Gate City coach Bill Houseright. “Coach Reed, he knows our kids, our system, and all our personnel.”For an expanded version of this article, please see Saturday’s print edition or our expanded electronic edition.
