BLOUNTVILLE — No auction date had been set yet for the former Cedar Grove Elementary School, Sullivan County Purchasing Agent Kris Davis said Wednesday.
In its most recent effort to sell the property as soon as possible, despite obvious support from at least half the full Sullivan County Commission for delaying the sale until the end of January, the County Commission’s Building Committee had told Davis to try to schedule a public auction as early as Saturday — and ideally no later than Nov. 16.
The committee wanted the auction to happen before this month’s regular county commission meeting, which is scheduled for Nov. 18.
Davis said she has not been able to complete negotiations with potential auctioneers because the other former elementary school property to be sold, Valley Pike near Bristol, hasn’t yet been released from quarantine status following cleanup of a methamphetamine lab.
The Building Committee had told Davis to schedule both auctions for the same day, to try and reduce the county’s advertising costs.
When an auction does take place, the results won’t be final until the sale price is approved by a majority vote of the full county commission.
An effort to delay the auction of the Cedar Grove property failed by a single vote at the commission’s October meeting.
