ROGERSVILLE — A Rogersville man was charged with simple assault Saturday evening after allegedly punching an off-duty Hawkins County deputy in the presence of a Rogersville police officer.

Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Keith Long told Rogersville Police Department Officer Chris Price that his ex-wife, Regina Roper, texted him to come pick up their children due to an ongoing argument between Mrs. Roper and her husband, Jamie Ellis Roper, 42, 218 Hillcrest St., Rogersville.

Price stated in his report that he was walking with Roper back toward the residence after speaking with him, and Long was walking off the front porch.

Price said there was a brief exchange of words between the two, at which time Roper struck Long, and a physical altercation ensued.

Price said Roper was charged with assault because he struck Long first.

Roper was released on $1,000 bond and was arraigned Monday.
