Mount Carmel donates truck for SVVFD ‘Elderly Assist’ program

MOUNT CARMEL — Stanley Valley firefighters will be using a “new” used 2000 Ford Expedition contributed by the town of Mount Carmel to continue the rural Hawkins County fire department’s “Elderly Assist” program.

On Tuesday the Mount Carmel Board of Mayor and aldermen voted 7-0 in favor of donating the 2000 Ford Expedition to the Stanley Valley Volunteer Fire Department.

SVVFD Chief Stacy Vaughan, who attended Tuesday’s BMA meeting, said the Elderly Assist program is currently in its second year.

“We had a lot of elderly people in our community that we as a fire department took it upon ourselves to go out and routinely check on them,” Vaughan tiold the BMA. “We make sure they have food, they have heat sources, or if they need fuel for their heaters. We’ve been using our personal vehicle to do that instead of using a fire truck.”
