KINGSPORT — Shannon Stroud’s goal in the fifth minute of overtime completed an improbable Dobyns-Bennett rally as the Lady Indians downed Hardin Valley 2-1 in the TSSAA girls soccer sectional at Indian Highland Park on Saturday.
The victory propels D-B (16-2-3) into next week’s TSSAA tournament in Murfreesboro.
“Actually, I missed the shot,” said an excited Stroud. “I was trying to go to the far post and when I struck the ball it went straight.”
Playing against the wind, Stroud’s shot dipped just enough to strike the underside of the crossbar and deflect into the Lady Hawks’ net.
“We’re going to state, it’s so exciting,” added Stroud.
Taylor Bishop had put Hardin Valley (16-3-4) on top 1-0 in the 27th minute of regulation play when her shot from just off the 18 curled left and past D-B goalkeeper Maggie Elpers.
In the 73rd minute, the Lady Indians’ Maggie Burkett took a free kick from about 30 yards out that sailed over Hardin Valley goalkeeper Jordan Beets and into the net to knot the game at one goal apiece.
After going into overtime in their win Thursday over Morristown West in the Region 1 final, the Lady Indians seemed the calmer team in OT.
Stroud ran down the right side, took a perfect crossing pass from teammate Collen Burkett and fired the shot heard around Northeast Tennessee.
The state tournament will begin next Wednesday at the Siegel Soccer Complex in Murfreesboro.
