KINGSPORT — A male college student won a homecoming queen contest wearing a bag over his head, going on to become a prolific writer and newspaper columnist.
A coach helped break the color barrier in southern college basketball, ultimately leading to his resignation although he didn’t see the trumped-up charges against him for 35 years.
Such are a few off the back stories among six Dobyns-Bennett High School graduates who were inducted into the school’s alumni Hall of Fame Thursday at MeadowView Conference, Resort & Convention Center.
The fifth annual ceremony honored coach Eddie Durham, teacher and author Barbara Goodlett, coach Beryl Shipley, writer Vince Staten, coach Dickie Warren and retired Army Col. Bruce Wilder. The first three are deceased.
