KINGSPORT — After 80 minutes of regulation, 20 minutes of overtime and 10 minutes of sudden death overtime, the Region 1-AAA girls soccer final came down to penalty kicks.
And it went down to the seventh penalty kick before the outcome was decided.
When Maggie Burkett converted her PK and Morristown West’s Connar Capps missed hers, Dobyns-Bennett came away with a dramatic 1-0 victory over the Lady Trojans. The Lady Indians outshot M-West 6-5 in the penalty kick phase of the game.
“We worked so hard tonight,” said Burkett. “I think we deserved this win.”
With the victory, the Lady Indians (15-2-3) advanced to the TSSAA Sectionals. D-B will host Region 2 runner-up Hardin Valley at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Morristown West (17-2-0) will travel to take on Region 2 champ Farragut.Read more of this story in Friday's print edition of the Times-News or in the expanded electronic edition.
