Kingsport man faces child sex charge

Michael Lee Bear

A Kingsport man has been charged with rape of a child, allegedly plying the victim with promises of pennies and candy, then threatening physical harm if anyone was told about the incident.

Michael Lee Bear, 25, of 1540 Granby Road, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant obtained by Kingsport police. He was booked into the city jail then transported to the Sullivan County jail in Blountville.

According to an affidavit filed in Kingsport court, the incident occurred between May of 2011 and May of 2012. Kingsport Police Department Detective Terry Christian reports the victim was between 8 and 9 years old at that time.

While at a family member's home, Bear allegedly coaxed the child into a bedroom by "offering to give ... candy and pennies." He promised as much candy as the child wanted, according to statements to police, if the child would "do something for him."

Police report that Bear removed the victim's pants and performed a sex act, then exposed himself.

Afterward he said he'd never supply candy again if anyone was told about the incident, according to court records.

Bear also allegedly threatened "to hurt" the child if anyone found out, with fear of retribution preventing the child from coming forward sooner.

As of Thursday afternoon, Bear remained jailed in Blountville on $40,000 bond.
