Police have charged a Kingsport woman with stealing more than $10,000 in jewelry, saying she took the items while visiting an elderly woman's home.
Edith Marie Vanzant, 22, of Kent Street, was arrested earlier this week by the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office. Police report that the theft occurred Oct. 11 at a residence on Brentwood Drive in Kingsport.
The elderly victim reported that her son had visited the previous day, accompanied by a female friend. That acquaintance, later identified as Vanzant, reportedly asked to use the restroom during the visit.
The next day, the resident noticed approximately 10 pieces of jewelry were missing from her bedroom, which is located next to the bathroom. SCSO Public Information Officer Leslie Earhart says an investigation pinpointed Vanzant as taking the items, with a few of the stolen pieces later recovered from her possession.
Vanzant is charged with felony theft over $10,000. She was released from the Sullivan County jail after posting $10,000 bond.
