Kingsport's McConnell wins at Muddy Creek

BLOUNTVILLE — Hundreds of bikers descended upon Muddy Creek Raceway Saturday for the 26th annual Suzuki Top Gun Showdown, grabbing crucial wins in the THOR Mega Series Championships.

With a total of 42 class champions set to be crowned, Round 15 in the series took place Saturday with the season-ending 16th round set for Sunday at Muddy Creek.

Among those taking top honors Saturday was Kingsport’s Logan McConnell, the big winner in the Schoolboy 2 division (14-16 years) over Brent East of Stokesville, N.C.

In 450 Pro action, Austin Albers, of Commerce, Ga., won on a holeshot, running away from the rest of the field in the first race. In the second 450, which saw Heath Harrison become the first rider to ever jump the step-up double tunnel at Muddy Creek, Jacob Hayes went from third to first on the last downhill run to net the win.

Harrison, of Silverhill, Ala., bounced back strong in the third 450 Pro race, easing out the win over runner-up Albers.

Hayes, of Greensboro, N.C., also claimed a win in 250 Pro action after getting together with Albers who got the worse end of the collision, going down hard. Hayes lost a couple of positions but pulled himself together to charge back to the front for his second win of the day.

Racing continues Sunday at 9 a.m.
