Kingsport, developer to split cost of traffic signal at Island Road, Memorial Boulevard

KINGSPORT — The city of Kingsport is partnering with a developer to install a traffic signal at Island Road and State Route 126 (Memorial Boulevard) to help the marketability of a shopping center.

The Kingsport Board of Mayor and Aldermen endorsed the action last week, in part citing a lack of faith that any state improvements are likely to occur on that section of SR126 within the next three or four years.

The BMA approved an agreement between the city and Kingsport Indian Springs LLC, care of Jefferson Bennett Development Group LLC, in which Bennett asks the city to manage the estimated $300,000 traffic light and roadway improvement project.

Bennett, who earlier this year petitioned the city to annex about nine acres next to the Indian Springs Shopping Center (which he also owns), and has since redeveloped the closed White’s Market into a Dollar General Market — which is performing very well — according to information provided to the BMA prior to the vote.
