GLENVILLE, W.Va. — Glenville State ran roughshod over Virginia-Wise on Saturday while the Pioneers defense hemmed in the Highland Cavs rushing attack in a 49-7 rout.
The game at I.L. & Sue Morris Stadium was a first-time Mountain East Conference meeting between the teams.
Glenville State (3-4, 3-3) roared out to a 21-0 lead before Virginia Wise quarterback Jeremy Eubank led the Cavs on a 72-yard scoring drive capped by a 5-yard TD pass to James Long just before the half.
Thanks to a punishing Pioneers defensive effort that spilled over into the second half, that was all she wrote for the Cavs (0-7, 0-5)
Glenville State rushed for 271 yards, and the GSC defense only allowed 8 rushing yards for Virginia-Wise, also forcing two interceptions.
Terry Reese and Demetrius Quarles racked up six tackles each. Darren Elliott had a pick-6 and Keith Mayes collected the other interception.
Conversely, GSC rolled up 489 yard of total offense. Running back Rahmann Lee rushed for 174 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns. Quarterback Sean Steele went 10-for-15 for 132 yards and two TDs, and backup Steffen Colon was 5-for-5 for 86 yards and a score.
Tight end Jake Harper led Glenville State with three catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Gardiner had three catches for 44 yards.
Eubank led Virginia-Wise, going 23-for-41 for 250 yards, giving up both picks. Long had 11 catches for 144 yards.
