Bucs' newcomers work their way into mix

JOHNSON CITY — The East Tennessee State basketball team is almost three weeks into the preseason now, and some newcomers have worked their way into the mix.

Coach Murry Bartow says starting jobs are up for grabs all around 10 days before the Bucs’ first exhibition game against Milligan College. He likes the competition.

“I have no clue on starters yet,” Bartow said Thursday. “We’re making progress but still have a long way to go. I can say right now that the attitude is great, and the cohesiveness and chemistry with this group is good. That’s true with a lot of teams at this time of year, but I think we’ve got a good blend this year.”

Three freshmen and three junior college players have joined the team. Newcomers like Isaac Banks, A.J. Merriweather and Jalen Riley are making early impressions.
