South soccer falls to University High in district tournament

KINGSPORT —  Twice yes, third time not so lucky. After falling twice in the regular season to Sullivan South, University High claimed the 1-AA district soccer tournament title with a 2-1 win over the Lady Rebels on Thursday.

The Lady Junior Bucs had complete control in the first period allowing South only two shots on goal. One of those shots was a penalty kick that gave the Lady Rebels a 1-0 lead.

Brianna Barrett’s arching kick sailed over the outstretched hands of goalie Taylor Treadway for the halftime lead. University High used goals in the 45th and 47th minutes to take the lead and the win.

Eighth grader Sarah Robinson’s straight on kick tied the contest and three minutes later Savannah Wexler’s shot put the Lady Junior Bucs up for good.

“We talked before the game that if we got down we are not going to let that keep us down,” said University High assistant coach Caitlyn Epps. “So we came back out in the second and played like we did in the first.”

The two teams continue action Tuesday. University High will host Chuckey Doak while South will hit the road to play Greeneville.
