JOHNSON CITY — Shannon Stroud’s goal in overtime propelled Dobyns-Bennett to a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Tennessee High in the District 1-AAA girls soccer final on Thursday at Kermit-Tipton Stadium.
With the win, the Lady Indians (13-2-3) will host South-Doyle in the Region 1 semifinals on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Indian Highland Park. The Lady Vikings (9-6-2) travel to take on District 2 champion Morristown West the same night.
Tennessee High scored first on a goal by Wesley Burleson in the 32nd minute and went to halftime up 1-0.
D-B’s Maggie Burkett, the tournament MVP, evened the score on a brilliant goal in the 48th minute. Stroud put the Lady Indians up 2-0 15 minutes later.
But the Lady Vikes’ Chloe Arnold tied the contest in the 72nd minute to force overtime.
Stroud’s goal in the 82nd minute gave D-B the cushion it needed. The teams played two 10-minute overtime periods, but the Lady Vikes could not come up with the equalizer.
