JOHNSON CITY — It took two fiercely contested games to determine who'll play in the District 1-AAA girls soccer final on Thursday night.
Dobyns-Bennett exploded for three second-half goals to finally subdue pesky Daniel Boone 4-0 in the first of two semifinal games Tuesday at Kermit-Tipton Stadium. Tennessee High pulled off a mild upset in the nightcap, scoring two goals in the game’s final five minutes to oust host Science Hill 2-0.
Shannon Stroud, Katie Hodge, Erin Burkett and Marrisa Dietz had goals in D-B’s win over Boone (15-3-1). Maggie Burkett, Colleen Burkett and Dietz had assists for the Lady Indians.
In the second semifinal, Anna Moore scored on a breakaway in the 72nd minute to put the Lady Vikings on top 1-0. Three minutes later, Melody Wallen took a corner kick from Chloe Arnold and sealed the Lady Hilltoppers’ fate when she slammed the ball into the back of the Science Hill net.
The Lady Indians (12-2-3) and Lady Vikings (9-5-2) meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday to decide the tournament crown. D-B and Tennessee High both secured berths in next week’s Region 1 tournament with their semifinal wins.
