Downtown Kingsport’s ‘road diet’ plan may be amended

KINGSPORT — A project to thin down Center Street through downtown Kingsport might be amended to include closure of Wexler Street.

The move, suggested by members of the Kingsport Board of Mayor and Aldermen during a work session Monday, would simplify the intersection of Center and East Sullivan streets.

It would eliminate what project planners said is a need to keep a two-block section of Center Street at its current four-lane-wide configuration — from the Wexler, East Sullivan and Center intersection, to Center Street’s intersection with East Sevier Avenue.

Under a “road diet” plan up for a vote by the BMA on Tuesday night, city staff have proposed changing Center Street from its current two lanes of travel in each direction to one lane in each direction with a center turn lane. The resulting leftover space would create a bike lane about 5 feet wide on each side of the roadway.
