Road rage leads to aggravated assault charge for Gray man

James Strong

One local man was arrested for road rage after he threatened another driver with a weapon, but was met with a surprise when the other driver greeted him with a gun, according to a police report.

James Anthony Strong, 54, 171 Windsong Drive, was charged with aggravated assault.

The incident began on Saturday when officers with the Kingsport Police Department were investigating a traffic crash at the intersection of West Stone Drive and C.E. Brooks. Officers were directing traffic through the parking lot of Pizza Hut to get traffic around the crash.

During the traffic delay, Strong became angry at the driver in front of him and began sounding his horn at the car in front of him. Strong then exited his vehicle and began moving toward the car in front of him with a metal baton.

According to the report, Strong yelled at the other driver. "If you cut me off again, I'll beat your (expletive deleted)."

Once the driver in front of Strong saw he was coming toward him with a weapon and heard his threat, he feared for his safety, the report stated.

So the driver drew his pistol, which he was legally carrying on him with a handgun permit.

Officers were already on the scene for the crash and quickly intervened. Strong was then arrested and no one was injured.
