Underage consumption suspect arrested after allegedly fleeing on foot

Jessica Nichole Bates

CHURCH HILL — Church Hill police arrested a Kingsport woman last week who was suspected of underage alcohol consumption after the woman allegedly attempted to run.

Shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday CHPD Officer Ethan Mays was inside the Ken-Jo market on Silver Lake Road when he reportedly noticed a woman drinking a beer in the passenger seat of a jeep in the parking lot.

Mays stated in his report that he exited the market at the same time as the woman’s male companion, and spoke to him.

The male, identified as Jordan Lawson, stated the woman is a friend, and he picked her up in Kingsport.

Lawson also stated that the woman, identified as Jessica Nichole Bates, 20, 359 Barnett Dr. Lot 10-A, Kingsport, was intoxicated when he picked her up, and confirmed that she did bring beer with her.

“Mrs. Bates was confirmed to be 20 years old, and had a strong odor of alcohol about her person and slow, lethargic speech,” Mays said. “Mrs. Bates denied having an open container, and also refused to answer my question regarding how much alcohol she had consumed. Mr. Lawson was cooperative throughout the incident and gave me consent to open the back passenger door to look for the open container.”

Mays added, “I had advised Mrs. Bates to stand there near her door, however, when I opened the back door, Mrs. Bates began running eastbound on foot.”

Bates allegedly refused Mays’ verbal commands to stop.

Following a short foot chase Bates was arrested and charged with underage consumption of alcohol and evading arrest.
