GATE CITY — Gate City fought off a determined Virginia High squad on Friday night to claim a 37-25 homecoming win at Legion Field.
The Blue Devils built a 21-6 third-quarter advantage only to see the Bearcats roll off 19 straight points and grab a 25-21 lead.
Virginia High’s Justin Brown broke off touchdown runs of 62 and 53 yards in that quarter. He finished the evening with 196 yards on 17 carries.
With the Devils trailing by four points, Gate City’s offense went to Caleb Herron, and he produced an 11-yard score. That along with Wesley Byrd’s PAT kick put the Devils up for good at 28-21.
Herron rambled for 196 yards and three touchdowns and recorded an interception on defense for Gate City in the victory over its former district rival.
Evan Baker’s 5-yard run and a safety against the Bearcats accounted for the final score.
“I like this bunch, they are coming together and the pieces are fitting in the right places,” said Gate City coach Bill Houseright.Read more in Saturday's print edition of the Times-News or in the expanded electronic edition.
