Autumn brings crisp, cool mornings and clear blue skies, pumpkins and foddershocks, falling leaves and the sweet smell of apple butter to small towns across America.

But for the cast of characters in LampLight Theatre’s latest production, fall signals the arrival of a terrifying troupe of demonic ragamuffins, led by an evil scarecrow named Tattie Bogal.

Opening Friday, “Harvest of Souls II” is the latest installment in LampLight’s annual Mortality Room series of Halloween shows.

Show time is 6:30 p.m., Oct. 11-13, 18-20, 25-27 and 29-31, with additional performances at 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

General admission seating is a suggested donation of $8 per person; reservations aren’t required, but they are recommended.

Scarecrows are a familiar sight in rural areas, where the whimsical stuffed creatures are known for chasing birds out of gardens and are often considered a symbol of protection.
That’s not the case for Tattie Bogal and the rest of the menacing ghouls in “Harvest of Souls II,” which sheds light on the history of All Hallows Eve and its roots in pagan harvest festivals.
When audiences step into the darkened theater, Tattie Bogal will introduce them to Samhain, the demon of the dead; Muck Olla, a boogeyman and reaper of souls; and a host of demonic scarecrows and other creatures that go bump in the night.
When these hellish visitors come to town for the second year, several teenagers who have forgotten the aftermath of the previous year’s festival are hoodwinked by Muck Olla’s powers and fall prey to his traps. Little do they know the eternal impact that this encounter will have on their mortal lives. Their destiny in the afterlife hangs in the balance as choices are made under the influence of principalities and dark forces.
Due to its mature themes, “Harvest of Souls” is rated PG-13 and is not suitable for young children.
LampLight Theatre is located at 140 Broad St. in downtown Kingsport.
