Coeburn men face attempted murder charges in Norton motel incident

NORTON — Abduction and attempted murder are alleged from an incident in a Norton motel on Sunday, Norton Police Chief James Lane confirmed on Wednesday.

Lane said patrol officers responded to a 911 call sent at 1:12 a.m. Sunday from the city’s Super 8 motel.

When the officers located the room where the call originated, they found three people bound, with their hands behind them, lying on the beds, Lane said.

Officers took three other individuals, all of Coeburn, into custody. Lane said the three men arrested were David Mark Hill, 43, Maynard Ralph Hill Jr., 45 and James Clifton Surratt, 54.

Lane said the three people that were bound “were shook up and so forth,” but the police are not releasing other information involving the alleged victims — including identities and genders — because the investigation is ongoing.

Lane said David Mark Hill has been charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, three counts of abduction, three counts of conspiracy to commit abduction, one count of armed robbery, one count of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, one count of brandishing a firearm while committing abduction, and one count of use of a firearm while committing abduction.

Surratt has been charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, three counts of abduction, three counts of conspiracy to commit abduction, one count of conspiracy to commit robbery, one count of brandishing a firearm, one count of use of a firearm during the commission of an abduction, and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Lane said officers recovered two firearms, a handgun and a shotgun.

All three of the men charged are housed in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield without bond pending court hearings, Lane said.
