CHURCH HILL — The top two seeds stood tall on Day 2 of the District 1-AAA volleyball tournament on Tuesday when Dobyns-Bennett and Science Hill each swept into the winners’ bracket finals.
The top-seeded Lady Indians met some resistance in Game 2 but managed to beat No. 4 Tennessee High 25-15, 25-23, 25-13. In the nightcap, the second-seeded Lady Hilltoppers rolled to a 25-14, 25-17, 25-16 decision over No. 3 Sullivan Central.
Tuesday’s action set up an elimination game between Tennessee High and Sullivan Central, which will be played on Wednesday at Volunteer High School. Science Hill and D-B will take the floor at the conclusion of that match with the winner punching its ticket into the Region 1-AAA tournament.
Taylor Henry led D-B with 15 kills. Kerri Jones and Makenzee Frohlich added 10 kills each, with Jones dishing out 26 assists and Frohlich contributing 11 digs.
D-B’s defense was bolstered by Sasha Morrisette’s 15 digs and 13 digs from Lexi Hartsock.
Lakeisha Gregory was a standout for Science Hill in the nightcap, totaling 13 kills. Allie Foster had 12 kills and Caprisha Webster added 11 for the Lady Hilltoppers.
Karah McKaig handed out 31 assists for Science Hill and Emma Martindale came up with 16 digs. Rebecca Lesnak had seven kills for Central and Katlyn Buckland distributed 19 assists.
