NET man sentenced in laptop child porn case

GREENEVILLE — A Bean Station man who pawned his laptop computer with thousands of pictures of child pornography on it will spend nearly seven years in federal prison for his crime.

John Maneval appeared in U.S. District Court in Greeneville on September 30 and received an 82-month prison sentence and was ordered to be on supervised release for life once released from prison. Maneval was indicted in April on one count of possession of child pornography and pleaded guilty to the charge in June.

Prosecutors recommended the 82-month sentence, while Maneval’s attorney argued for 78 months. Maneval faced a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

According to court records, Maneval pawned a laptop computer at Hoot’s Pawn Shop in Morristown in May 2012. Employees there soon discovered it had images of child pornography on the hard drive. The authorities were then contacted, and Maneval eventually was arrested.

A forensic analysis of Maneval’s laptop yielded 4,834 images and five videos of child pornography, along with 3,326 images of children in various stages of undress and 2,691 texts and literature regarding sexual intercourse with children.
