ERWIN — Elimination games are always nerve-wracking, but Sullivan North’s volleyball team erased all doubt of the outcome early in its first-round match against Johnson County in the District 1-AA tournament on Monday.
The Lady Golden Raiders jumped out to a 20-4 lead in Game 1 and cruised to a 25-15, 25-7, 25-20 sweep, ending the Lady Longhorns’ season en route to a semifinal matchup against Sullivan East. North faces the Lady Patriots on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Unicoi County High School.
The Lady Raiders used a strong offensive attack to keep Johnson County on its heels for virtually the entire match. North’s aggression allowed the Lady Raiders to win 16 straight points in Game 1 and 15 straight in Game 2.
A 10-point run in Game 3 turned a 6-3 deficit into a 13-6 lead, paving the way for a clean sweep. Makenna Smith led North with 17 kills to go along with nine digs, and Hannah Dingus added 13 kills, five digs and an ace. Victoria Cradic had 27 service points with five aces.
