KINGSPORT — The USATF Racewalk Championships drew 54 competitors from 21 states to Kingsport on Saturday morning.
David Swarts of Jackson, Mich., emerged as the overall male winner after finishing the masters division 5K course in a time of 23:12.
“I’m very happy because I haven’t trained for this,” Swarts said. “I raced the 30K National Racewalk three weeks ago and my legs are still geared for that long distance. The strength was what I think carried me through.”
Ian Whatley of Greer, S.C., came in second in 23:55.
The women’s master division title went to Joan Terry of Orlando, Fla., who crossed the line in 26:24.
The women’s division had three local walkers: Joyce Curtis (38:53) and Ruth Ketron (39:49) of Kingsport and Barbara Taylor (41:57) of Johnson City.
Ketron, 83, seems to have found her own fountain of youth. She currently holds several state age records in running, including in the 5K, 8K and 10K.
In the junior division, for walkers ages 14-19, 14-year-old Steven Berry of Orem, Utah, crossed in 27:17, followed by David Heisler of Groveland, Fla., in 28:59.
Twins Jesi (35:06) and Tori Heiser Whatley (35:32) of Greer, S.C., were the only two entrants in the female division.
