Waffle House shooter sentenced to 8 years

Michael Latrale Bunche

BLOUNTVILLE — A Kingsport man involved in the New Year’s Day shooting of a Bristol woman in a local Waffle House restaurant will spend at least the next eight years in prison.

Michael Latrale Bunche, 25, of Bloomingdale, shot Kristen Smith after a brief argument in the early morning hours of Jan. 1, 2012, at the Waffle House on East Stone Drive. Bunche was indicted on attempted first-degree murder, theft over $500 (the pistol used in the shooting) and unlawful carrying or possession of a handgun in connection to the shooting.

Prosecutors filed a superseding indictment in June, charging Bunche with an additional felony — employing a firearm in commission of a dangerous felony.

Kingsport attorney Cliff Corker, who represented Bunche, said a plea agreement was reached on Sept. 27 in which Bunche agreed to plead guilty to a reduced charge of attempted second-degree murder and the superseding firearm charge.
