Update: Two teenagers, a boy and a girl, have been charged

Update: 3:28 p.m.

The Scott County Sheriff's Office confirmed Friday afternoon that two Gate City High School students are in custody and facing felony charges for allegedly threatening to kill a classmate at school.

Scott County Sheriff John Puckett said a 17-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder as a result of the incident, which caused school officials to place the Gate City High School/Middle School complex on a soft lockdown Friday.

Puckett said the teens were arrested for making what law enforcement felt were credible threats to shoot another student.

Authorities were reportedly made aware of the alleged threat when another student made a post on Facebook alluding to the conversation she overhead the suspects having.

Update: 9:25 a.m.

Authorities have confirmed that two individuals have been arrested in connection with a threat made to a Gate City High School student.

Gate City High was put on a soft lock-down this morning and will remain on lock-down the rest of the day, according to officials.

Gate City Police, the Scott County Sheriff's Office and Virginia State Police are on the scene, and some of them will remain there the rest of the day.

According to a statement released by Gate City High School Principal Greg Ervin, the lockdown resulted from an indirect threat made by two students against another individual at the school.

"There have been many stories circulated on social media, but the individuals involved have been identified and charges are pending," Ervin said in the statement. "These individuals no longer have access to school grounds."

Ervin said any potential threat has been addressed and added that the school had been cleared by a Virginia State Police K9 unit.

"While we understand the concern of parents when any threat is made, we currently have additional law enforcement officers on grounds throughout the school day," Ervin said. "The school is safe and we will continue to operate on a normal schedule."

The soft lock-down means students are not allowed outside but normal school activities inside the school are taking place. The lock-down also applies to Gate City Middle School, which is connected to the high school.
