BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech freshman Malik Mueller has been ruled ineligible to play this season.
In a statement, Hokies men’s basketball coach James Johnson said the NCAA ruled that Mueller, a native of Ehingen, Germany, has issues with initial eligibility requirements and that he could not be more specific. Johnson said Mueller will remain on scholarship and be able to practice, and that he will have four years of eligibility remaining.
The Hokies were counting on the 6-foot-3 Mueller to challenge for playing time at both guard spots this season.
Johnson, entering his second season as coach, said the Hokies will have a wide-open competition for playing time in the backcourt after the graduation of NCAA scoring champion Erick Green and the transfer of shooting guard Robert Brown.
