Update: Three students, driver treated for minor injuries in Russell County school bus crash

Update: 11:00 a.m.

At 7:38 a.m. Monday (Sept. 30), Virginia State Police Trooper S.A. Sutherland responded to the scene of a school bus crash in Russell County. The crash occurred on Route 671 about a half mile from Route 58. 

A Russell County school bus was traveling north on Route 671 when it ran off the left side of the gravel road. The bus went down a slight embankment and overturned onto its side.

There were a total of 11 elementary, middle and high school students on the bus at the time. Three students and the driver were all transported to Russell County Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. The injured students include a 15-year-old female, a 14-year-old male and a 17-year-old male. 

The driver, Robert R. Trent Jr., 63, of St. Paul, Va., was wearing a seat belt. Trent has been charged with reckless driving. Speed was not a factor in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.

The Virginia State Police reports responding to a school bus crash Monday morning in Russell County. According to a press release, three students and the driver suffered minor injuries.

The incident occurred at 7:38 a.m. on Honaker's Chapel Road. Ten students were on the bus at the time of the crash.

The VSP says no additional information is available at this time.
