WISE — Hogan Goodson hit Dominique Jefferson in the end zone with four seconds remaining in the game and the Bulldogs spoiled the Cavaliers’ homecoming with a 24-17 win in front of an otherwise festive crowd of nearly 2,000 onlookers at Carl Smith Stadium Saturday.
Union (1-3) initiated scoring with a 33-yard field goal from Alex Sigmon. The Cavs’ James Long answered with a 95-yard scoring kickoff return for the 7-3 lead on Paul Melshen’s kick. A 19-yard TD run by Leonard Dixon put the Bulldogs ahead 10-7. Michael Lowder’s intereception of a Cullen LaVoi pass set up a 10-yard scoring run by Goodson.
Virginia-Wise (0-4) knotted it up at 17 with LaVoi’s 66-yard scoring strike to Terrence Younger and a 48-yard field goal by Melshen.
The Cavs’ blocked a fourth-quarter field goal attempt by Sigmon to preserve the stalemate, but LaVoi was picked off yet again to set up the winning score.
