BRISTOL, Tenn. — Nothing short of a state championship will do for the Daniel Boone cross country team in 2013.
The squad finished runner-up last season after missing the state title by nine points.
On Saturday afternoon, Adam Barnard kept the Trailblazers on track with his first-place victory in the 22nd annual Bristol Cross at Steele Creek Park. His finish also propelled the squad to the team championship.
Barnard posted a blistering 16:04, beating second-place finisher Brad Swiney. The John Battle runner crossed the line in 16:29.
“Last year on this course I ran a 16:06 and then a 15:57 at conference on the same course,” Barnard said. “We’ve had a tough week of training this week and the goals were for me to win individual and for us to win as a team.”
Boone placed seven runners among the first 21 finishers.
Morristown West’s MaKenzie Jones posted a personal-record time of 18:28 to repeat her victory in last year’s meet.
Jones’ finish aided by a fourth-place showing from teammate Jessica Lord (19:38) propelled the Lady Trojans to the team title. Science Hill finished second.
