Southwest Virginia Drug Task Force rounding up 52 suspects

KINGSPORT — The Southwest Virginia Drug Task Force is in the process of rounding up more than 50 people who were indicted on narcotics-related charges last week by a multi-jurisdictional grand jury.

According to the drug task force, the grand jury handed down a total of 95 indictments for 52 suspects. Most of those indicted live in and around the Big Stone Gap area of Wise County, although several residents of Scott and Lee counties were also charged.

As of late last week, 25 of the 53 suspects had been taken into custody during a large-scale drug roundup, with a total of 51 indictments served .

Wise County Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Adrian Collins said two other suspects had been arrested following the release of the initial 25 names, while another suspect had been killed recently in a car wreck.

Collins said drug task force officers and area law enforcement agencies will continue to pursue the two dozen or so remaining suspects until they turn themselves in or are arrested.

Any suspect not taken into custody will have their names added to the National Crime Information Crime Information Center database and be considered fugitives.

Most of the indictments stemmed from prescription drugs, although several people were indicted on marijuana, methamphetamine and synthetic drug charges, Collins said.

“When there are larger number of cases it can get some attention, so hopefully it will act as a deterrent for people considering engaging in drug transactions,” Collins said.
