Kingsport to send representative to countywide meeting on schools

KINGSPORT — City school board members aren’t sure who should attend a meeting later this month on K-12 education across Sullivan County, but they say someone will.

During a recent work session, the board discussed a Sept. 9 letter from County Mayor Steve Godsey inviting city Board of Education and city officials to attend an evening meeting on Sept. 26 at Northeast State Community College.

The letter, which Godsey wrote was on behalf of the Sullivan County Commission’s Education Committee, says the meeting will look at secondary education countywide “and determine if there are better alternatives in the way we organized, fund and perform this mission” of K-12 education.

BOE President Carrie Upshaw and Vice President Susan Lodal will be out of town and unable to attend the Sept. 26 meeting, and Superintendent Lyle Ailshie said although the board couldn’t vote at the work session he’d like to get guidance on how the school system should respond to the letter, which requests a list of attendees.
