BLOUNTVILLE — If the Sullivan County Commission’s Building Committee has its way, the former Cedar Grove Elementary School will be auctioned off — again — within the next 30 days.
The group, meeting in called session Wednesday, indicated it wants the auction completed before the full Commission’s next meeting date: Oct. 21.
State law requires the full commission to approve any such sale.
An earlier sealed-bid auction arranged by the Building Committee did not gain the full commission’s support, in part because commissioners said they wanted to more carefully consider what the property will be used for by any buyer.
Under the plan laid out by the Building Committee Wednesday, the commission will have no say again until a “winning” bidder is presented the day a vote is called for.
The Building Committee said the only stipulation to be advertised is that the full commission must ultimately approve the bid.
The Building Committee directed County Purchasing Agent Kris Davis to hire a professional auctioneer — but to keep her selection to only those “not tied to the county” — to conduct the sale before Oct. 21, preferably on Oct. 18 or 19.
If the commission again rejects the sale, the county will owe the auctioneer a commission based on what would have been the winning bid.
