Brother, sister face multiple charges after stop at Gate City checkpoint

Shaina Brooke Peterson

GATE CITY — A brother and sister were arrested on multiple felony charges at a safety checkpoint late last week after Gate City police allegedly found drugs and weapons in their possession.

Police allege that Shaina Brooke Peterson, 26, of Gate City, was so inebriated when she drove through the checkpoint that she asked officers what town she was in.

Peterson’s brother, Ricky Lee Taylor, 29, of Kingsport, was also arrested at the checkpoint.

Peterson was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of Schedule IV narcotics and possession of brass knuckles.

Taylor was also charged with carrying a concealed weapon and one count each of possession of narcotics and possession of a firearm while in possession of narcotics.

Gate City Police Chief Kim Birchfield said the safety checkpoint was being conducted on East Jackson Street at approximately 8 p.m. on Friday when officers checked Peterson’s vehicle and noticed she seemed “confused, had bloodshot eyes, and constricted pupils.”

Birchfield said Peterson was asked to perform a field sobriety test, which she reportedly failed, after she asked officers what town she was located in.

Birchfield said officers placed Peterson in a patrol car before they searched her vehicle and found several Xanax pills in her purse.

A set of brass knuckles was also allegedly found hidden in the handle of the driver’s side door of her vehicle.

Birchfield said officers turned their attention to Taylor, the car’s passenger, after they noticed an empty gun holster sticking out from under his seat.

When questioned, Taylor reportedly told officers that there was a loaded gun under his seat. Birchfield said officers were forced to take “immediate action” when Taylor began reaching for the firearm.

Taylor was also taken into custody at the checkpoint and transported with his sister to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office in Gate City for booking.

During the booking process, Birchfield said officers found three plastic bags containing a white, powdery substance in Taylor’s possession.

Both Taylor and Peterson were taken to the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield. Peterson was being held on a $1,000 bond, while Taylor’s bond was set at $2,000.
