KINGSPORT — With first place in the Big 7 Conference up for grabs, Dobyns-Bennett’s volleyball team took control by sweeping Sullivan Central on Tuesday.
The Lady Indians commanded all aspects of the match, beating the Lady Cougars 25-22, 25-18, 25-15 inside the Buck Van Huss Dome. D-B is now the only team in the league with one loss. Central and Science Hill have two apiece.
The Tribe (18-4, 7-1) jumped out to an 11-2 advantage in Game 1, and although Central (21-4, 6-2) roared back to grab a 22-21 edge late, the Lady Indians were able to seal the deal.
Game 2 followed the same pattern: The Tribe jumped ahead before holding off the Lady Cougars, setting up a relatively easy win in Game 3.
Austin Payne, Lexi Hartsock and Keri Jones were the backbone of a stingy D-B defense. Payne led the way with 15 digs while Hartsock had 14 and Jones chipped in 11. Jones and Hartsock also had two aces each and Jones handed out 25 assists.
Taylor Henry was nearly unstoppable up front, charting 16 kills to go with her three aces. Makenzee Frohlich added seven kills and three aces for the Lady Indians, who avenged a four-set loss at Central early in the season.
Katlyn Buckland handed out 15 assists for Central. Huntre Baxter slammed six kills and Ashley Reynolds added five.
