Hawkins County fire association almost broke, can’t afford insurance payment

ROGERSVILLE — If the Hawkins County Fireman’s Association doesn’t come up with another $2,500, it won’t be able to cover the insurance bill that provides accident and sickness coverage to about 275 volunteer firefighters in the eight county departments.

During the budget hearings for the proposed 2013-14 budget earlier this year, the HCFA was denied a requested contribution increase from $17,000 to $20,000.

On Friday, HCFA President Tony Fugate asked the County Commission’s Safety Committee to support an increase in the county contribution — not to $20,000 as previously asked, but to $25,000.

Most Safety Committee members voiced support for the HCFA funding increase during Friday’s meeting. The request will next come before the Budget Committee on Monday afternoon.

That will likely be the last Budget Committee meeting before the full commission considers approval of the overall 2013-14 county budget on Sept. 23.
