KINGSPORT — Computer-generated images and copies of architectural drawings have given a group of decision makers what they were looking for in a project unlike anything Kingsport has ever experienced.
Based on those drawings and digital renderings, the Kingsport Economic Development Board recently voted to keep alive an $800,000 incentive package going to Somera Capital Management to help Florida-based Frank Theatres bring an IMAX to the Kingsport Town Center, formerly known as the Fort Henry Mall. SMC, based in Santa Barbara, Calif., is the mall’s owner.
“Based on what the (meeting) minutes reflect, they have met their performance criteria,” KEDB Chairman Bob Feathers said of Frank’s progress.
In addition to renovating the existing theater site, Frank Theatres plans to expand into the mall parking lot with a 40,000-square-foot, two-story addition.
The addition would house a “Cine Bowl & Grille” restaurant, 50-game arcade, 18 lanes of bowling, an auditorium with stadium-like seating to view sports events and the centerpiece of it all: An 85-foot-tall IMAX theater seating up to 400 people.Read more of this story in Sunday's print edition of the Times-News or the expanded electronic edition.
