KINGSPORT — Kaitlin Barrett found the back of the net three times, including the winning goal with four minutes left to play as Sullivan South beat University High 3-2 at South on Tuesday.
Barrett initiated scoring in the eighth minute, taking the ball away from Gracie Craig in the box and muscling it past for an unstoppable point-blank goal.
Barrett added another unassisted goal in the 35th minute for the Lady Rebels (4-6-1, 2-0-0 District 1-AA).
University High’s Sarah Robinson, who arrived just before the match started, cut South’s lead to 2-1 when she scored off a cross by Ashley Pulver in the 39th minute.
The Lady Bucs (4-2-0, 1-1-0) tried to tie it in the final seconds before the half with a shot on goal by Gracie Somich. A save by South goalkeeper Ashley Luster preserved the Lady Rebels’ halftime lead.
University High tied it at 2 on Pulver’s goal off an assist by Maya Houston in the 71st minute.
The Lady Bucs got their last, best chance for a go-ahead goal a few minutes later on a set piece, but Luster gathered in Robinson’s kick for the save.
Barrett settled the issue for good when Taylor Lane’s cross slipped past a couple of defenders and Barrett powered it on through.See Wednesday’s print or electronic edition for an expanded version of this story.
