UNICOI — The Dobyns-Bennett boys and Science Hill girls flexed their golf muscles Monday and came away with impressive wins in the Big 7 Conference tournament at Buffalo Valley Golf Course.
The Indians upended Science Hill 313-316 in the boys’ competition, and Volunteer finished third (333).
On the girls’ side, the Lady Hilltoppers ran away with the title, posting a 146-162 win over runner-up D-B. Daniel Boone was third (173).
Individually, D-B sophomore Haverly Harrold shot a 2-under-par 70 to claim the girls’ title. Daniel Boone’s Haley Wagner and Science Hill’s Addie Baggarly were next after shooting 72s.
Peter Chang of Science Hill won the individual boys title with his 1-over 73. D-B’s William Nottingham and Daniel Boone’s Grayson Clark finished three strokes back.
The D-B boys posted three of the top five scores on the day. Along with William Nottingham’s 76, Andrew Nottingham added a 77 and Drew Doran a 78.
“We had a great practice round on Sunday,” said D-B coach T.J. Ross. “I felt good about our chances coming over here today.
“This group of guys is really motivated,” Ross added. “They work hard every day so I just let them do their own thing out on the course.”
In spite of two double bogeys, Harrold was able to get around the difficult Buffalo Valley layout under par.
“Well, I offset the doubles with an eagle and a bunch of birdies,” Harrold said. “The key for me today was that my putts were falling. That always helps.”
Chang, who earlier this summer won the Tri-Cities Junior Amateur at The Virginian, knew a steady round could prove to be the answer at Buffalo Valley.
“I came into the tournament hitting the ball well,” the senior said. “I thought that anything below 75 would be a good score around this course.”
In two weeks the postseason will begin in earnest with the District 1-AAA tournament at the Country Club of Bristol. That event determines who advances to the Region 1 championships.
