Town all fired up for Grillin’ at the Gate

Gate City’s Town Manager Greg Jones says he hopes this year’s Grillin’ at the Gate event will showcase the best attributes the town has to offer.

“What we look for at an event like this is to be able to have people come in and experience Gate City,” Jones said. “We want them to come in, come back and shop some of our local businesses. We want them to experience our small town and, hopefully, they’ll want to come back. It’s a great barbecue event and everybody can come and have fun, but at the same time, we’re creating an opportunity for us to showcase what we have to offer in Gate City.”

Grillin’ at the Gate will be held throughout the day on Saturday, Sept. 14 along Jackson Street in the heart of Gate City.

The event kicks off at 10 a.m., with live entertainment beginning at 3 p.m. on the festival stage. The festivities are set to continue until after 9 p.m.

The event itself is free; barbecue and beer will be available for purchase.

The five bands scheduled to perform throughout the day are Clinch Mountain Mojo, Rob Russell, The Farmhouse Ghost, Scratch River Telegraph Company, The Nomadz and Elvis impersonator Jim Fields.

“New this year is a corn hole tournament, a pet show and a watermelon seed spitting contest. We’ll also have food vendors and arts and crafts vendors and a cruise-in car show,” Jones said.

There will be five different categories in the barbecue contest, including best sauce, chicken thighs, ribs, pork and brisket.

Piglet’s Corner will provide entertainment and games for the kids, and Photogenius in Gate City will sponsor a photo contest.

The Break Away 5K Race To End Domestic Violence will be held just prior to Grillin’ at the Gate at 8 a.m., beginning in the Water Street parking lot. The race is organized by Hope House of Scott County Inc. in an effort to raise awareness about domestic violence.

Sponsors for this year’s Grillin’ at the Gate include New Peoples Bank, Scott County Lifesaving Crew, Eastman Credit Union, Scott Veterinary Services, Vaughn and Melton Engineering and the Bank of Scott County.
