Curricula, enrollment on Wise County School Board’s slate

WISE — A range of discussion items will highlight Tuesday’s regular session of the Wise County School Board,  including initial school year enrollment numbers and a presentation on academic plans.

The discussion agenda will also provide an update on the high school construction program, student achievement, evaluation of the school division superintendent, employment following a closed session on that matter, a hybrid retirement plan, and lease of St. Paul athletic fields.

The only action items on the agenda are employment following the closed session, and bills payable. The closed session will include personnel and legal matters.

The School Board meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Education Center in Wise.

Initial enrollment figures for the new school year show a bump of 144 students over last year’s final enrollment numbers recorded in June.

In the Union High School attendance area in and around Big Stone Gap, the 10-day enrollment numbers for 2013-14 show Appalachia Elementary School at 323 students, a drop of 20 from June’s 2012-13 enrollment of 343, while Powell Valley Primary shows 612 at the beginning of this school year, up 31 students from 581 at the end of last school year.

Powell Valley Middle School’s start of the school year enrollment of 533 is four less than the 537 recorded in June, and Union High School shows 665 enrolled, an increase of 46 above June’s 619.

In the Central High School attendance area that includes Wise and the Pound areas, J.W. Adams Combined School shows an increase of 23 students at the beginning of this school year at 546 enrolled compared to 523 at the end of last school year. 

Wise Primary’s initial 2013-14 enrollment is 620, just five fewer than the end of last school year, while L.F. Addington Middle School and Central High School in Wise show increases of 26 and 21 students each, respectively, at 483 at LFA and 671 at Central.

In the Eastside High School attendance area around Coeburn and St. Paul, St. Paul Elementary School shows an increase of 31 students over the conclusion of last school year with 203. Coeburn Primary School has a slight decrease of eight students with 477 now compared to 485 at the end of last school year, and Coeburn Middle School a decrease of 18 with 393 now compared to 411 in June.

Eastside High School’s 10-day enrollment report for the start of the new school year is 421, an increase of 21 students over the 400 recorded in June. Overall, the 10-day enrollment for 2013-14 is 5,947 students compared to 5,803 in June, an increase of 144 students.
